Committee-Board Lunchtime Presentations

Special Lunchtime Sessions from ASHA Committees, Boards, and Councils

These lunchtime sessions are opportunities for you to learn from members of ASHA's committees, boards, and councils about a variety of important topics. The sessions are not eligible for ASHA CEUs; however, you will be able to use the contact hour offered at each session to maintain your ASHA certification. A Verification of Attendance form, which has been approved for documenting your attendance for maintaining ASHA certification, will be provided at each session.

Thursday, November 15, 12:00-1:00 p.m.

CAA Accreditation Standards
Location:
Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 053
Members of the CAA will discuss the new accreditation standards and expectations of programs during their implementation in 2008. The CAA will provide an update on changes in the accreditation policies and procedures, expectations regarding demonstration of compliance, and using the higher education data system (HES) to submit and report data for accreditation purposes. Representatives from university education programs are encouraged to attend.

Clinical Specialty Recognition: What's In It for Me?
Location:
Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 051
This session will include a presentation by the Council of Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR) with a general overview of Specialty Recognition and specific information regarding the current Specialty Boards. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for participants to talk with members of the Council and the three current Specialty Boards: Fluency Disorders, Child Language Disorders, and Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Roles & Guiding Principles for Speech-Language Pathologists in Early Intervention

Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 052A
The speech-language pathologist has a central role on early intervention teams in providing services and supports for families and their infants/toddlers with disabilities. ASHA's Committee on the Role of the Speech-Language Pathologist in Early Intervention will discuss SLP roles including (a) prevention; (b) screening, evaluation, assessment; (c) planning, implementing, monitoring intervention; (d) team consultation/education; (e) service coordination; (f) transition planning; (g) advocacy; and (h) advancing the knowledge base. The Committee will present guiding principles for comprehensive, coordinated, team-based services that are family-centered, culturally responsive, developmentally supportive, promote participation in natural environments, and are based on high quality internal and external evidence.

CAA Site Visits: What to Expect, How to Prepare
Location: Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 053
For graduate programs that anticipate a 2008 site visit by the CAA, this session will prepare you for a successful and comprehensive visit! CAA members will provide tips on developing agendas, describe the conduct of the visit, discuss documentation necessary on-site, and review policies affecting the site visitors' role. All site visits conducted after January 1st will be under the 2008 accreditation standards. Program directors are encouraged to attend, but this is open to all faculty members who are part of a program that is having a site visit in the calendar year 2008.

Developing Your Application Portfolio for Specialty Recognition in Child Language
Location: Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 051
Sponsored by the Specialty Board in Child Language (SBCL), this session will provide assistance in developing the specialty recognition in child language application portfolio. The application process for specialty recognition in child language requires submission of a portfolio that includes various materials that demonstrate the applicant's expertise in child language. This session is an opportunity for current applicants and their advisers and potential applicants to review and discuss the application process, including the development of the application portfolio. Applicants and their advisors and potential applicants are welcome to bring application materials to this session for discussion with SBCL members and successful applicants.

Higher Education Data System (HES) Update

This presentation will provide a general overview of the newly developed Higher Education Data System (HES), the 2007 and 2008 HES launch schedule, and recommendations for identifying and managing administrative roles necessary for an academic program to successfully complete HES instruments (e.g., signatory, editor). New and existing program directors who would like the opportunity to learn more about the HES and to speak with individuals who represent the HES instrument owners (ASHA, CAPCSD and the CAA) are encouraged to attend. The Clinical Fellowship Experience: What You Need to Know
Location: Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 052A
This session is geared toward speech-language pathology clinical fellows, their supervisors/mentors, and new speech-language pathology graduates beginning to prepare for the clinical fellowship experience. Presented by a member of the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC), the session will highlight the purpose and requirements of the clinical fellowship and how to select a setting and supervisor/mentor and provide information on the documentation that needs to be submitted. The roles and responsibilities of the mentor/supervisor will be outlined and information on the amount of supervision required will be provided. There will be time at the end of the presentation for questions from the audience. Session Handout [PDF]

ASHA's 2007 Focused Initiative on the PhD Shortage

ASHA's commitment to the Focused Initiative on the PhD Shortage in Higher Education continues in 2007. Participants will learn about the specific strategies undertaken in 2007 to recruit PhD students, recruit and retain PhD level faculty, advocate for PhD funding, support integration of research instruction at all levels of the curriculum, and launch a Higher Education Data System (HES) and EdFind, a new online search engine. A cumulative summary of all resources and programs established since 2004 will be provided. CAA 101 for New Program Directors

Does academic accreditation seem like a mystery? Are you unsure of the program's responsibilities for reporting quality improvement and program data? This session was developed with new program directors in mind. CAA members will be available to unravel the mysteries of the accreditation review processes, provide tips on simplifying reporting processes, and discuss practical applications and benefits of the higher education data system (HES). New directors of accredited and developing academic programs are encouraged to attend.

Roles of SLPs Serving Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorders

In 2006, ASHA published a family of documents on the roles and responsibilities of SLPs serving individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Those roles include screening, diagnosis, assessment and intervention, partnering with families, collaboration in service delivery, professional development, research, and advocacy. The multitude and complexity of the roles and responsibilities for SLPs related to serving this population present challenges and exciting possibilities for our profession. This session will provide a forum for examining those roles and responsibilities, reviewing the resources available to support SLPs in meeting the needs of individuals with ASD, and addressing questions from attendees.

Town Hall Meeting With the Multicultural Issues Board
Location: Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Room 158
ASHA's Multicultural Issues Board (MIB) will be holding an informal and interactive "Town Hall Meeting" where members can share their ideas and concerns regarding multicultural issues in audiology and speech-language pathology with board members in a free-flowing and conversational format. Topics for discussion will be audience-driven, with opportunities provided for dialogues regarding service delivery to culturally and linguistically diverse populations as well as resources available for professionals seeking information regarding multicultural issues.
