Description of Office for Advisory Council Chairs
The Chairs of the Audiology Advisory Council and Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Council are charged with: (1) facilitating the identification, discussion, and ranking of issues of concern to members; (2) serving on the Board of Directors as full members; (3) informing the Board of Directors on Council recommendations related to member issues, future budget items, and dues increases; (4) monitoring participation of Advisory Council members in the peer review process; (5) conducting the election of members to the Committee on Honors, Committee on Nominations and Elections, Financial Planning Board and Government Relations and Public Policy Board, and the elections for the following years' chair and vice chair of the Advisory Councils as directed by the Committee on Nominations and Elections; (6) determining the annual Advisory Council meeting locations and dates (within the first 6 months of the year) and with the approval of the BOD; (7) coordinating the annual meetings of the Advisory Councils in conjunction with National Office staff liaisons and other appropriate individuals; and (8) facilitating and chairing electronic communications and discussions of their respective Advisory Council.

- Willingness to develop certain skills if one does not possess them, such as understanding financial statements, learning more about the substantive program areas of the Association and use of technology tools established by the Association to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position

- Ability to facilitate discussions face-to-face and through electronic means among a large body
Primary Responsibilities
In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Advisory Council member position description, the chair will:
- Attend and participate in all meetings of the Board of Directors
- Be informed about the Association's mission, services, policies, and programs
- Assist the Board of Directors in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities
- Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board meetings and conference calls
- Attend the annual ASHA Convention
- Annually review and vote on the Association's budget
- Contribute to a review of the Executive Director
- Prepare and present information at meetings on behalf of the Association as needed
- Serve as the Board of Directors liaison to the Advisory Council and prepare and present information at meetings of the Advisory Council on behalf of the Board of Directors
- Serve as the Advisory Council liaison to the Board of Directors and prepare and present information at meetings of the Board of Directors on behalf of the Advisory Councils
- Coordinate the annual meeting of the Advisory Council with the support of the National Office staff and other appropriate individuals
- Initiate and facilitate communications among the members of the Advisory Council throughout the term of office
- Conduct elections for the following:
- Committee on Honors
- Committee on Nominations and Elections
- Financial Planning Board
- Government Relations and Public Policy Board
- Chair of the Advisory Council
- Vice Chair of the Advisory Council
Time Commitment
- Approximately 10 hours per week (excluding travel)
Association Support
The Association provides the Chairs of the Advisory Councils with administrative support from ASHA staff in the Executive Office to carry out the responsibilities of their position, reimbursement of travel expenses for all required meetings; and an equipment budget.
