Noma B. Anderson

Immediate Past President

Noma B. Anderson is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Florida International University (FIU). She has held this position since November 1, 2006. From July 2001 to November 2006, Dr. Anderson was Dean of the School of Health Sciences at FIU. Prior to coming to FIU, Dr. Anderson was on the faculty in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Howard University in Washington, DC. She chaired that department for 10 years. Dr. Anderson has also been on the faculty at Hampton University. She received her BA from Hampton Institute in Virginia, her MS from Emerson College, and her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Her area of study has been speech-language pathology. She began her clinical career at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She also was employed as Supervisor for Speech, Language and Hearing for Pittsburgh Head Start. Dr. Anderson's professional areas of expertise are in multicultural aspects of communication sciences and disorders, second language and second dialect acquisition, language acquisition, childhood language disorders, and test preparation for the national examination in speech-language pathology. Dr. Anderson has co-authored three texts and co-edited two texts in speech-language pathology, has authored and co-authored several journal articles, and has made numerous presentations to professional associations, colleges and universities, and public schools.

Dr. Anderson has been principal investigator for several training grants from the U.S. Department of Education and has served on the Advisory Board and the Advisory Council of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. Dr. Anderson has served as a consultant for the panel setting visa screening requirements for speech-language pathologists and audiologists from foreign countries.

Dr. Anderson is actively involved in professional associations. She was the 2007 President of ASHA. In 2006 she served as ASHA President-Elect. From 1998 to 2000 Dr. Anderson was ASHA's Vice President for Academic Affairs. She has also served as Deputy Director of the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH) and Secretary of the Council of Graduate Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders. In 1992 she was recognized as a Fellow of ASHA, and in 1999 she received Honors from the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association. In 2002 she was recipient of the Scholar/Mentor Award from NBASLH. In 2002 Dr. Anderson received the Diversity Incentive Award from the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
