ED Holds 2008 OSEP Leadership Conference

(09/15/2008)

The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) of the U.S. Department of Education (ED) sponsored its Leadership Conference, Leading Together to Improve Outcomes, on August 27th in Baltimore, Maryland. Presentations focused on reading/literacy and coordinated early intervening services, with concurrent sessions addressing these issues.

In a related matter, on July 28, 2008 OSEP issued a letter of guidance [PDF] to the Chief State School Officers and State Directors of Special Education on the use of funds provided under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for Coordinated Early Intervening Services (CEIS). IDEA, as amended, allows and sometimes requires local education agencies to use funds provided under Part B for CEIS for students who are currently not identified as needing special education.

For additional information on OSEP activities, please contact Catherine Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
