Last updated May 2008

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

Maryland no longer offers licensure for the Educational Audiologist.

Speech-Language Pathologist

House Bill 326 (enacted in 2007) requires that speech-language pathologists (SLPs) hired by the public schools on and after October 1, 2007 must be licensed by the Board. Certification from the Maryland State Department of Education is not required. However, individuals who have been continuously practicing speech-language pathology in public schools on or before September 30, 2007 are exempted from the licensure requirement. In addition, all SLPAs must be licensed to practice in the schools.

Support Personnel

House Bill 326 requires that speech-language pathologist assistants (SLPAs) must be licensed to provide services in schools. SLPA license requirements are as follows:

  1. Baccalaureate degree in speech–language pathology or communication sciences and disorders from an accredited institution or other approved degree
  2. Have successfully completed the clinical observation hours and supervised clinical assisting experience hours
  3. Have successfully completed a competency skills checklist after a period of supervised practice by a licensed SLP
