Rhode Island Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

The information below has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Audiologist

Audiologists in the public schools are contract employees and do not fall under specific teacher requirements of the State Department of Education. State licensure is typically required for practice in the schools.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Speech-Language Pathologist—Professional Certificate

  1. Completion of six in-service credits while on provisional certification
  2. Three years of documented experience as a school speech-language pathologist in Rhode Island while on provisional certification. This experience must be verified by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

Provisional Certificate (valid for three years)

  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited or an approved institution of higher education; and
  2. Advanced degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited or approved institution

Continuing Education Requirement

To renew a professional certificate you must complete nine in-service credits every five years.
