Conference to Highlight Latest Genetics Research

ROCKVILLE, MD -Pediatric Audiology and Genetics, a conference sponsored by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), will convene experts in pediatric audiology, otolaryngology, genetics, molecular biology, and pediatric psychiatry in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on February 14-15, 2004. 

The event will be held at Disney's Contemporary Resort where participants will discuss the latest developments in genetics research and the implications for the treatment of hearing loss in infants, birth to 6 months.

Saturday, Feb. 14 
10:15-11 am Usher Syndrome: Clinical Implications of Recent Advances in Molecular Genetics
Three distinct clinical subtypes, and current standards of care and emerging therapeutic possibilities for Usher Syndrome (deafness and concurrent blindness) patients

Saturday, Feb. 14 
11 am-12 noon Connexins in Deafness: Clinical Implications
Characteristics of hearing loss caused by connexin gene mutations,  how connexin proteins enable communication between neighboring cells of the inner ear, and benefits of genetic testing

Saturday, Feb. 14 
3-4:15 pm Genetic Testing and Counseling: Pros and cons of genetic testing, the available types of genetic tests, parental attitudes, values, and beliefs about hearing loss, and perspectives from different cultures

Sunday, Feb. 15 
10:15-11 am New Directions in Gene-Based Treatment
Developments in restorative therapy for persons with hearing loss; biological and safety issues in gene-based treatment and challenges to implementation
