The White House has announced President Obama's intent to nominate Alexa Posny to the post of Assistant Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of Education. Posny currently serves as the Commissioner of Education for the state of Kansas, responsible for helping over 450,000 students meet or exceed high academic standards, and overseeing a state education budget of a little over $4.5 billion dollars. Prior to this, Posny served as the Director of the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) for the Department of Education (ED) under the Bush Administration. Next steps include the official nomination and confirmation by the Senate before a start date at ED can be determined.
ASHA looks forward to working with Posny in her new role as Assistant Secretary, as she was supportive of issues of concern to speech-language pathologists and audiologists during her tenure as Director, OSEP. For further information visit the White House's Web site or contact Catherine D. Clarke, ASHA's Director of Education and Regulatory Advocacy, via e-mail at cclarke@asha.org or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 5611.
