This issue of Perspectives focuses on alternative paths to doctoral education. The authors explore the perspectives of those employed in communicative disorders and sciences (CDS) programs who obtained their research doctorates from special education, rehabilitation counseling, and developmental psychology. Finally, the authors provide suggestions for understanding and managing the complexities of faculty work.

Learning Outcomes
You will be able to:

  • state the nature of the current shortage of PhD-level faculty in the CDS field and describe how recruiting from outside the field might address the shortage
  • identify three major themes contributed by the special education doctorate to speech-language pathology
  • define rehabilitation counseling and identify ways that this discipline intersects with CDS
  • define developmental psychology and identify its links to the CDS field
  • identify the changing complexities of faculty work and state strategies to effectively balance work responsibilities
