This issue of Perspectives begins with an overview of the management of the sequelae of traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a variety of different perspectives. The authors discuss the management of TBI as a trauma surgeon, from acute care to rehabilitation and return to the community; the implementation of a program, Attention Improvement Management (AIM), designed to help children and adolescents with TBI who demonstrate attention problems; and Project BRAIN, an innovative project designed to address challenges related to managing school-age children who have sustained TBIs. The issue concludes with information regarding medical terminology that is useful to incorporate into augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems.
Learning Outcomes You will be able to:
- describe the role of the trauma surgeon in managing patients with TBI
- describe the theoretical basis for the development of the AIM program
- describe the challenges and potential solutions to improving communication between the hospital and schools for children with TBI
- describe the Joint Commission standards for effective communication and how using appropriate AAC systems meet these standards
