People with communication disorders may experience a wide range of emotions related to their disorders, often including depression, anxiety, and isolation. This program seeks to draw awareness to the potential for suicide ideation in these clients and provide SLPs and audiologists with basic knowledge of the risk factors of suicide and what they can do if they are concerned about a particular client. The course will review research about suicide ideation and completion in individuals with various disorders served by our professions and identify important resources. We will look at specific cases of clients who contemplated or completed suicide and discuss the roles and responsibilities of SLPs and audiologists in suicide prevention and postvention supports for families who have experienced the suicide of a loved one.
