This issue of Perspectives begins with a welcome message and an invitation from our SIG 17 Coordinator. The authors go on to concentrate on ethical considerations in volunteer tourism in a global context; connections across professions linking West Africa and the United States; Multicultural Intensive Speech-Language Therapy Intervention Clinic (MISTIC) as a program with an international collaboration involving Mexico and the United States; the ethnic characteristics of participants involved in international research; and increasing family literacy activities in a school in Mexico.
Learning Outcomes You will be able to:
- identify risks and needs for sustainable and ethical practices in volunteer work in global contexts
- explain the structure, content, and process used to organize and implement an interdisciplinary study abroad course that included a department of speech-language pathology and audiology
- identify benefits and describe how an international collaboration and project can occur in a communication disorders department, including a university’s speech-language hearing clinic
- describe the diverse ways in which ethnicity has been conceptualized by various countries around the world
- describe the importance of encouraging family literacy activities and show an international collaboration with Mexico as a means of fostering the exchange of ideas, the building of partnerships for research and practice, and the advancement of our field
