The Special Interest Division on Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Populations was established to study, apply and advance knowledge of normal communication, communication disorders, and service delivery issues that affect African-, Asian-, Hispanic-Americans, American Indians, and other culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

Perspectives on Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Populations is now available online only, published by ASHA with HighWire Press. Perspectives is published 3 times annually in March, July, and October. Division 14 is a CE Provider and offers its issues for self-study to earn CEUs.

Vision Statement

To be a leading resource for advancing knowledge of the influence and importance of cultural and linguistic diversity on human communication and the infusion of this knowledge into research and clinical practice.

Mission and Study Areas

Mission: The mission of the Division on Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations (Division 14), is to provide leadership and advocacy for best practices relating to audiology and speech-language pathology services for culturally and linguistically diverse populations, to promote research, and to provide networking, collaboration, education, and mentoring opportunities for its affiliates, students, and other service providers.

Study Areas: Bilingualism; procedures for least biased/alternative assessment and intervention; sociocultural factors that may affect speech-language pathology and audiology services to members of CLD populations; etiologies of specific speech, language and hearing disorders that have a greater or differing impact across these groups; professional and public policies.

Goals

  1. To promote continuing education and foster the exchange of information in the area of communication disorders and sciences in CLD populations;
  2. To promote research in the areas of normal communication and communication sciences and disorders in CLD populations;
  3. To promote the development and application of best practices for speech-language pathologists and audiologists who serve CLD populations;
  4. To serve as an advocate for CLD populations regarding prevention, identification, treatment and education in the area of communication disorders and sciences;
  5. To provide speech-language pathologists and audiologists with support, networking, and mentoring opportunities in scientific and clinical endeavors relating to culturally and linguistically diverse populations;
  6. To increase participation of professionals representative of and those interested in CLD populations;
  7. To facilitate communication with other special interest divisions and encourage the study of CLD groups as it relates to specific divisions;
  8. To serve as a resource for the Association on issues relating to cultural and linguistic diversity; and
  9. To facilitate the exchange of information between the Multicultural Issues Board and professionals who are working with, interested in, or representative of CLD populations.

Perspectives on Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations, Division 14's  Internet publication, is published in March, July, and October, and features:

Division Affiliates can earn ASHA CEUs through self-study of Perspectives' excellent articles on research and practice issues! (A $5 processing fee applies to each issue used for self-study.)

Perspectives is published 3 times annually, in March, July, and October.

Continuing Education

Division 14 CE activities include:

  • Offering Perspectives for self-study (there is a $5 processing fee per issue)
  • Sponsoring a Short Course at the ASHA annual Convention on a CLD topic
  • Providing a discount on fees for select Short Courses at Convention and on the Division 14-sponsored CLD Conference

Committee Activities

Division affiliates can serve in leadership roles and participate in division activities.

  • Steering Committee - responds to ASHA requests for input regarding policy, guidelines, committees, and other issues; sets Division goals, projects, and programs (see list of current members below)
  • The Division 14 Coordinator - heads the Steering Committee and represents the Division on the ASHA Board of Division Coordinators
  • Continuing Education Committee – Develops continuing education offerings and manages the CE process
  • Affiliate Development Committee – Develops the member recruitment and reclamation recommendations to increase and maintain Division affiliate membership
  • Research Committee – Develops recommendations for the Division's contributions to ASHA's research and scientific base
  • Mentorship – Develops mechanisms for identifying future Division leadership and mentoring Division affiliates
  • Specialty Recognition – Investigates the feasibility of developing a specialty recognition program for bilingual clinicians
