S.T.E.P. 1:1 - Student to Empowered Professional Mentoring Program

Feel the Power of Passionate Mentoring

Students enrolled in communication sciences and disorders programs will be entering professional environments within an increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse world. ASHA acknowledges the value of the unique sensitivities and skills that professionals who are from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds can bring to the discipline of human communication sciences and disorders. Thus, ASHA established The ASHA Gathering Place and its signature mentoring program, S.T.E.P. 1:1 - Student to Empowered Professional to:

  • Connect self-motivated students with experienced mentors in meaningful, one-to-one mentoring relationships
  • Support mentoring relationships through guided learning experiences
  • Provide online resources for all students and mentors seeking tools, information and inspiration
  • Facilitate the continued recruitment and retention of racial/ethnic minority students

ASHA's Student to Empowered Professional 1:1 (S.T.E.P.) program is designed especially for students who are from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds enrolled in CSD programs*. Through this program, you will be offered a structured mentoring relationship designed to help you build a network of support and answer your many questions about graduate schools, career options, and current trends.

*All students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in communication sciences and disorders are eligible to apply, however, preference for program placement and matching with mentors will be given to students from racial/ethnic backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented in the communication sciences and disorders professions.
