SIG 8 Perspectives Vol. 14, No. 1, November 2013

This issue of Perspectives addressed issues related to dizziness and falling. There are three articles in this issue. One article by Angela Smith and Amy Porter specifically addressed issues related to assessing fall risk and make suggestions for intervention. The primary concern raised in this article is the need to reduce falls in the elderly and address how audiologists and physical therapists can work collaboratively to do this. A second article by Faith Akin, Courtney Hall, and Krista Riska addressed an interdisciplinary approach to the assessment and treatment of dizziness. These authors encourage a more cost-effective collaborative relationship between audiologists and physical therapists. The third article by Robin Criter, Jessie Patterson, and Julie Honaker addressed the audiologists’ role in assessing risk of falls. These authors suggested that more audiologists need to be involved in screening for the risk of falls in their elderly clients. They raise some interesting research questions, as well as review the tools that are available to both the audiologist and the physical therapist in reducing falls.
