Measuring Outcomes for Patients With Cochlear Implants
Format(s): Streaming Video
CEUs: 0.05
0.5
Audiologists must evaluate outcomes for patients with a cochlear implant, to both monitor the performance of the surgically implanted device as well as maximize quality of life. Several different types of measurement tools are available, and determining which ones are the most appropriate and effective is particularly important given the time constraints that clinicians face in a busy clinic. In this course, Teresa Zwolan will describe test measures commonly used to measure outcomes for adult and pediatric cochlear implant recipients, including individuals with additional disabilities or limited hearing with their device. The course will review recent expansions of cochlear implant candidacy and discuss how test measures are being modified to determine if a cochlear implant should be considered in particular cases, even if a patient does not qualify based on traditional criteria. You’ll walk away with a checklist of various test measures and the types of patients for which they are most applicable.

Tips for the Differential Diagnosis of Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)
Format(s): Streaming Video
CEUs: 0.05
0.5
When examining scores on central auditory processing tests, the examiner looks for patterns across the test battery to make a diagnosis. Often, the pattern is very clear and indicates a specific primary type of central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). But sometimes the pattern isn’t so clear, and we risk over- or underinterpreting the data, leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective intervention. In this course, Jeanane Ferre will discuss case studies to illustrate when data supports a diagnosis of a specific CAPD and when it does not. You’ll walk away with greater confidence in diagnostic decision making.

Central Auditory Processing Disorders: Assessment, Differential Diagnosis, and Treatment
Format(s): Audio CD and Manual
CEUs: 0.2
2.0
This course provides audiologists, SLPs, and other professionals with an overview of current perspectives on assessing, diagnosing, and treating CAPD. You will learn about the fundamental neuroscience behind auditory processing and about CAPD’s relationship to language, learning, and communication difficulties. Then you will explore the development and implementation of individualized, deficit-specific treatment plans. The program focuses primarily on CAPD in school-aged children, but the principles also apply to adults. This is a slide-based, online presentation followed by an online question-and-answer session.

SIG 7 Perspectives Vol. 22, No. 1, May 2015
Format(s): SIG Perspectives and Exam
CEUs: 0.05
0.5
This issue of Perspectives included a brief literature review on research in music perception performance in adults who use cochlear implants (CIs). Although CIs were primarily designed to benefit perception of spoken speech, there has been growing interest in outcomes for music perception, specifically the perception of rhythm, pitch, and melody in music.

Grand Rounds in Cochlear Implant Candidacy (On Demand Webinar)
Format(s): On Demand Webinar
CEUs: 0.2
2.0
Over the years, cochlear implant candidacy has changed dramatically. When devices were first introduced, only patients with little to no ability to recognize speech were considered. Advances in technology and evolving ideas about who can benefit from a cochlear implant have expanded the candidate pool, which now can include adults and children with greater preoperative residual hearing, nontraditional candidates (such as those with additional disabilities), and “off label” patients who do not meet the approved indications for the device but could benefit nonetheless (such as those with single sided deafness or asymmetrical, progressive hearing loss). This course will explain the candidacy changes in greater detail and provide guidelines to help professionals determine if a referral to a cochlear implant center is appropriate for a particular patient. The webinar will outline the roles of audiologists and SLPs in making these recommendations and will also discuss how to counsel patients regarding their possible candidacy for a cochlear implant.
