In this webinar for school-based SLPs, the presenters will discuss the unique needs of middle- and high-school students with language disorders in the context of the “hidden curriculum” of the secondary classroom. The webinar will address how SLPs can empower successful language learning through contextualized language and literacy instruction. The presenters will share strategies for creating contextually based language goals grounded in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and other state standards as well as practical ideas for both progress monitoring and dynamic, integrated intervention.

• Define contextualized instruction and explain how language intervention can be integrated into academic contexts
• Create and use a variety of progress monitoring instruments to measure language progress on goals grounded in CCSS/state standards

Contents

Hour 1: Theoretical and empirical grounding in key concepts

• Middle- and high-school learners on our caseloads - who are they/what are their needs? (20 minutes)
• What is context at the secondary level and why is it important for learning/the hidden curriculum (20 minutes)
• Content and disciplinary literacy (20 minutes)

Hour 2: Practical Application

• What does this look like in the school-based setting? (40 minutes)
• Teacher connections/coordinated lesson planning
• Contextually based goal-writing grounded in the CCSS
• Intervention in context
• Progress monitoring
• Case-based practice/moving forward, Q&A (20 minutes)

Presenter Information

Laura Green, PhD CCC-SLP, a former public school-based SLP, is a professor at Texas Woman’s University. She has supervised in the schools and teaches coursework in language development, school-age language and literacy, speech sound disorders, and research methods. Research interests include treatment research, morphological awareness, classroom-based intervention, and literacy.

Julie Wolter, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Professor in the School of Speech Language Hearing and Associate Vice Provost for Innovation and Online Learning at University of Montana.
