Audiologists play a vital role in the evaluation and management of individuals who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This webinar will discuss the special considerations for testing and managing auditory and vestibular concerns of adult patients with TBI. The speakers will discuss comprehensive audiometry, auditory processing, and vestibular testing as well as share strategies for working with adults with TBI and resources you can pass on to your patients.

Presenter Information

Melissa Kokx-Ryan, AuD, PhD, CCC-A, received her AuD and PhD from Gallaudet University, with her dissertation titled “Evaluation of Low-Gain Hearing Aids as Treatment for Auditory Processing Deficits in Service Members with Normal Hearing Thresholds and History of mTBI.” She is currently an audiologist at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). Her research focuses on the study of auditory processing deficits, traumatic brain injury, hearing aid applications, and hidden hearing loss. She was previously a research audiologist at the National Military Audiology at Speech Pathology Center at WRNMMC, where she continues to collaborate and remains involved in several ongoing research protocols.

Joanna Pearson, AuD, CCC-A, is a board-certified audiologist practicing in Bethesda, Maryland, at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, evaluating active duty military for hearing and balance concerns post-traumatic brain injury. Dr. Pearson has worked with active duty military since 2018, when she began her career as a civil servant audiologist with Naval Medical Center San Diego.
