This issue of Perspectives on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) takes an intimate look at some of the unique challenges facing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who recommend AAC treatment that includes the use or purchase of a speechgenerating device. (SGD). The role of the SLP is influenced either directly or indirectly, voluntarily or involuntarily, depending on the funding source providing the reimbursement for clinical services and/or the purchase of an SGD. This issue is not about the who, what, when, how, or why of SGD funding policies, but is about factors that contribute to SLPs wrestling with completing the SGD funding processes while remaining consistent with our high professional standards.
