Candidate for Board Member at Large in Speech-Language Pathology: Julie D. Malone, CCC-SLP

Julie D. Malone, MS, CCC-SLP, is a devoted speech-language pathologist (SLP) whose background and experiences have positioned her as a leader in public schools. Her educational journey began at Indiana University, followed by an internship at the University of Sydney and a master’s degree in clinical speech pathology with an emphasis in public schools from Northern Arizona University (NAU), which laid a robust foundation for her career. Residing in San Diego, Julie applies her prior experiences at a clinic and adult group homes to enhance her practice.

Ms. Malone’s unwavering dedication to advancing the speech-language pathology profession is evident through her active engagement in various union roles. By volunteering with ASHA, she plays a pivotal role on the Coordinating Committee and the School Finance Committee of Special Interest Group (SIG) 16, School-Based Issues; in these roles, she embodies exemplary leadership characteristics such as strength, vision, and dynamism that align with ASHA’s core values.

Justice, equity, and promoting positive change are central to Ms. Malone’s advocacy efforts. Her effective communication skills, generous mentorship, and collaborative clinician involvement in advocacy pursuits catalyze meaningful shifts in the field. Julie’s exceptional negotiation abilities, consensus-building aptitude, professional education, and resource development skills have earned her the prestigious Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Contributions in Schools from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation (ASHFoundation). 

Her steadfast commitment to motivating positive change is evident in her ability to balance multiple responsibilities, lead committees, and spearhead projects like a statewide pediatric workload survey and a nationwide letter to superintendents addressing misconceptions hindering the recruitment and retention of SLPs.

Looking forward, Ms. Malone remains resolute in her mission to foster favorable transformations within the SLP community. Her unwavering dedication, leadership, and advocacy initiatives make her a true innovator, inspiring others to champion the profession and advocate for positive change. Through engaging members, streamlining the advocacy process, and encouraging participation, she seeks to amplify the collective impact of audiologists, SLPs, and SLPAs in shaping policy decisions and ensuring the longevity of their careers.
