On February 14, the U.S. Department of Education provided updated guidance [PDF] in relation to civil rights enforcement and DEI. This updated guidance stated, “Institutions that fail to comply with federal civil rights law may, consistent with applicable law, face potential loss of federal funding.” Consider seeking guidance from your administrators on this matter or reach out to your state education agency (SEA) to see if they have any information/guidance on how this updated guidance may impact practices and policies for schools and academic programs.

ASHA has reviewed the initial executive orders and actions signed by the new Administration that would most likely impact you and your work in health and education. As of today, we have compiled summaries of 22 executive orders and shared the potential impact of each.
ASHA is closely monitoring and tracking issues most relevant to the professions and communicating with congressional partners and other key stakeholders. We will provide updates on current and new executive orders as well as any relevant legislation, regulations, or actions. Although it will take some time to understand the full impact of current and future executive orders, we remain firmly committed to advancing ASHA’s advocacy priorities, many of which support advocacy on issues directly impacted by the executive orders.
We recognize the uncertainty and challenges you may be facing in your work. We’ve spoken to many ASHA members regarding guidance on navigating some of the issues they are experiencing. Please continue sharing so that we can understand your experiences, support you, and determine what additional resources may be needed.

The unprecedented number of executive orders signed by the new Administration has the potential to significantly impact you and your work in health and education.
ASHA is currently conducting a thorough review of these executive orders. We will provide an initial assessment of the orders that could directly impact our professions, including research, academic training, and service delivery, and will continue to update you as these issues evolve and we better understand their practical implications. The assessment will also inform our ongoing development of tools and resources for you, our advocacy efforts, and actions you can take.
ASHA's 2025 Public Policy Agenda identifies our advocacy priorities for the year, which we will continue to fight for. Even though we are working with a new Administration and new Congress, our priorities remain the same and we will adjust our strategies to make positive change within the current political climate. Your involvement as ASHA members and affiliates will be critical to help elevate our advocacy efforts. Elected officials will want to hear from their constituents and how these changes are impacting you and those you serve.
We will provide updates and analysis on the executive orders as soon as possible. Check out ASHA's advocacy information and resources online and sign up for the ASHA Advocate to stay up-to-date.
